Pleached Trees – Elegant Screening with Year-Round Structure
Pleached trees have become one of the most sought-after features in modern garden design, offering an elegant way to create privacy without sacrificing valuable garden space. Their elevated canopies provide screening from neighbouring properties while allowing light to filter beneath, making them ideal for patios, lawns and contemporary borders. The level of screening achieved depends largely on the maturity of the trees when planted and the size of the trained frame. Frames typically range from around 1.2m x 1.2m up to 2m x 2m, with larger frames providing instant impact but commanding a higher price.
Both evergreen and deciduous varieties are available to suit different gardens and budgets. Popular evergreen choices include Photinia 'Red Robin', Elaeagnus × ebbingei, Portuguese Laurel (Prunus lusitanica), Holm Oak (Quercus ilex) and Magnolia grandiflora. If you prefer seasonal interest, deciduous favourites include Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus), Beech (Fagus sylvatica), Lime (Tilia cordata), Ornamental Pear (Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer') and Liquidambar styraciflua.
For the best start, plant pleached trees in well-prepared, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter, ensuring they are thoroughly watered during their first two growing seasons while roots establish. Keep the area around the base free from weeds and consider applying a mulch to retain moisture and improve soil health. Newly planted trees should remain securely staked until established.
Ongoing care is straightforward but important. Water during prolonged dry spells, feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser each spring, and lightly trim the trained framework once or twice a year to maintain its crisp shape. Remove any vigorous shoots that appear below the trained canopy and check ties regularly to ensure they are not restricting growth. With just a little annual maintenance, pleached trees will reward you with decades of beautiful structure, privacy and architectural interest.
These Elaeagnus pleached trees were recently installed by Tracey-Anne Gardens to create an elegant evergreen screen. As they mature, the individual frames will gradually knit together to form a continuous green wall, providing year-round privacy while retaining an open, airy feel beneath the canopy.
