Creating Beautiful Outdoor Rooms in the Ribble Valley

How to Design Your Outdoor Room

For generations, British gardens have been viewed as somewhere to mow the lawn, tend the borders and enjoy the occasional sunny afternoon. Today, that mindset is changing.

Longer, warmer summers mean we're spending far more time outdoors than we once did. The garden has become a place to enjoy breakfast before work, share family meals, entertain friends into the evening or simply unwind with a glass of wine as the sun sets.

The most successful gardens aren't designed around individual features – they're designed around the way you want to live.

Start with lifestyle, not landscaping

Before choosing paving or plants, ask yourself one simple question:

How do I want to use this space?

Perhaps you dream of lazy Sunday breakfasts in the morning sunshine. Maybe your ideal evening involves friends gathered around an outdoor kitchen, or perhaps all you really want is a quiet corner where you can escape with a book.

Once you understand how you'd like to live outdoors, every design decision becomes much easier.

Think in zones

Just as every room inside your home has a purpose, your garden should too.

Rather than one large patio, consider creating distinct areas that naturally flow together.

  • A dining area close to the house for everyday meals.
  • A comfortable lounge beneath a pergola for relaxing.
  • An outdoor kitchen or barbecue area for entertaining.
  • Beautiful planting that softens the hard landscaping and surrounds you with colour and fragrance.
  • Subtle pathways that encourage you to explore the garden.

Each space should feel connected whilst having its own identity.

Build the framework first

Hard landscaping provides the structure that everything else relies upon.

Choosing quality natural stone, carefully positioned retaining walls, steps and pathways creates the framework that will serve your garden for decades.

I often encourage clients to invest in timeless materials rather than chasing short-lived trends. Natural sandstone, for example, develops character with age and complements almost any style of planting.

Add comfort

The difference between a patio and an outdoor room is simple...

Comfort.

Comfortable seating, generous dining furniture, cushions, shade and shelter all encourage you to stay outside for longer.

Pergolas are becoming increasingly popular because they define a space without enclosing it. Add climbing plants or soft lighting and they quickly become one of the most inviting places in the garden.

Let planting do the decorating

Inside your home you might decorate with artwork, fabrics and accessories.

Outside, planting performs the same role.

Structural evergreen shrubs provide year-round shape, ornamental grasses add movement, while flowering perennials bring colour from spring through to autumn.

A carefully layered planting scheme softens walls, frames seating areas and makes the whole garden feel settled and welcoming.

Don't forget the evenings

One of the biggest changes in recent years is the amount of time we now spend outdoors after sunset.

Thoughtfully positioned lighting transforms a garden completely.

Soft uplighting beneath trees, gentle illumination along pathways, discreet lighting beneath seating and warm pendant lights beneath a pergola allow your garden to remain inviting long after daylight has faded.

Lighting isn't simply practical—it creates atmosphere.

Plan for the future

One of the most common mistakes is adding features one at a time without an overall vision.

A patio this year.

A pergola next year.

Perhaps some planting later.

Whilst each addition may be beautiful on its own, they often fail to work together.

Instead, begin with a masterplan.

Even if your project is completed in phases over several years, every feature can be designed to complement the next. The result feels cohesive, balanced and far more valuable than a series of separate improvements.

Bringing it all together

A thoughtfully designed outdoor room isn't about owning the biggest garden or spending the most money.

It's about creating a place that reflects your lifestyle.

A place where children play barefoot across warm stone.

Where family celebrations continue long after sunset.

Where morning coffee becomes a daily ritual.

Where the boundaries between home and garden quietly disappear.

At Tracey-Anne Gardens, that's what I love designing.

Not simply patios or planting schemes, but beautiful outdoor spaces that become one of the most lived-in rooms of your home.
